Before that, she held the position of <strong data-start=\"548\" data-end=\"605\">Assistant Professor at the Population Research Centre<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"607\" data-end=\"656\">Institute of Economic Growth (IEG), New Delhi<\/strong> (2011\u20132013).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"673\" data-end=\"1208\">Dr. Saikia holds a <strong data-start=\"692\" data-end=\"725\">Master\u2019s degree in Statistics<\/strong> from <strong data-start=\"731\" data-end=\"760\">Gauhati University, Assam<\/strong>, and earned her <strong data-start=\"777\" data-end=\"798\">M.Phil. and Ph.D.<\/strong> from <strong data-start=\"804\" data-end=\"820\">IIPS, Mumbai<\/strong>. During her doctoral research, she spent significant time at the <strong data-start=\"886\" data-end=\"952\">Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR), Germany<\/strong>, a globally renowned institution for <strong data-start=\"990\" data-end=\"1026\">mathematical demography research<\/strong>. She further enhanced her expertise as a <strong data-start=\"1068\" data-end=\"1101\">post-doctoral research fellow<\/strong> at the <strong data-start=\"1109\" data-end=\"1182\">International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Austria<\/strong>, from <strong data-start=\"1189\" data-end=\"1205\">2017 to 2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1210\" data-end=\"1395\">With extensive experience in demographic research, statistical analysis, and public health studies, Dr. Saikia continues to contribute significantly to the field of population sciences.<span style=\"color: black;\">\u00a0Her academic journey led her to <strong data-start=\"201\" data-end=\"238\">Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)<\/strong>\u2014India\u2019s top-ranked university\u2014in 2013, and subsequently to the <strong data-start=\"302\" data-end=\"360\">International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS)<\/strong> in 2021, the premier institution for population studies in India. At IIPS, she is actively engaged in teaching and mentoring students, specializing in <strong data-start=\"512\" data-end=\"663\">advanced demographic methods, demographic change with a focus on health and mortality analysis, indirect estimation of demographic rates, and quantitative methods in social science research<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1210\" data-end=\"1395\"><span style=\"color: black;\">Over the course of her career, Professor Saikia has supervised a total of<strong> 29 Ph.D. scholars<\/strong>\u2014including 16 awarded at JNU and 13 currently under her guidance at IIPS\u2014alongside 9 M.Phil. scholars, contributing significantly to research in demographic studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Beyond her institutional roles, Professor Saikia has been a visiting scholar at several prestigious international institutions, including <strong>University of Rostock, Germany; Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR), Germany; Australian National University (ANU), Australia; International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), Austria; Institut National d&#8217;\u00c9tudes D\u00e9mographiques (INED), France; New York University (NYU), UAE; Centre Population &amp; D\u00e9veloppement (CEPED), France; London School of Economics (LSE), UK; University of Toronto, Canada. <\/strong>Her academic pursuits have taken her to 24 countries, where she has actively contributed to research and scholarly discussions. Currently, she serves as <strong>a member of the prestigious Technical Advisory Group of the United Nations Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME).<\/strong><br \/>Professor Saikia\u2019s research primarily focuses on: Formal demography, including mathematical and statistical relationships between demographic measuresof\u00a0 Mortality and cause-of-death studies using life tables; Socio-economic and regional health inequalities; Disability analysis and demographic data quality; Undocumented immigration; Demography of tribal populations; Indian Knowledge System.<\/p>\n<p>A prolific researcher, Professor Saikia has published extensively as a lead author in high-impact international journals, including The Lancet Global Health (Impact Factor: 38.92); The WHO Bulletin (Imapct factor 11.1); Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS); PLOS One; Population Studies; Demographic Research; Population, Space and Place; Social Science and Medicine; Economic &amp; Political Weekly (EPW); Journal of Biosocial Science (JBS); SSM-Population Health; Tropical Medicine and International Health; BMJ Global Health, BMC Journals, Geohealth, GeroScience, among others. She has also contributed chapters to several edited books. Notably, her co-authored book, <strong>&#8220;Adult Mortality in India: Trends, Socio-economic Disparities, and Consequences,<\/strong>&#8221; was published by Springer in 2023.<br \/>Professor Saikia has received numerous national and international awards in recognition of her contributions to demographic research. She also plays a key editorial role in several prestigious journals: <strong>Associate Editor \u2013 Journal of Population Research (Springer); and Guest Editor \u2013 Demographic Research.<\/strong><br \/>Outside academia, Professor Saikia is passionate about: Traveling the world, exploring diverse cultures; Inspiring students, especially female scholars, to become independent and impactful contributors to society; and supporting underprivileged communities, particularly in her homeland. She is also a regular columnist, writing insightful articles for leading national newspapers and magazines, including The Indian Express, The Hindu, The Outlook, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Saikia possesses extensive experience in academic administration across various institutes and universities. She served as the <strong data-start=\"272\" data-end=\"328\">Head of the Centre for Online and Distance Education<\/strong> at IIPS duing October 2022 to June 2025.
